Consumer Kauila Haumea was in need of a heavy-duty rollator but was denied by his insurance. He ended up duck taping the wheels of his old and rusted heavy-duty rollator to get around because the base model insurance approved rollator with an aluminum frame would not fit his needs.
When Independent Living Specialist Karin Riedel noticed the dilapidated condition of his old rollator, she advocated on the consumer’s behalf and orchestrated the teamwork between the consumer, his insurance case coordinator, consumer’s PCP, and the medical equipment supplier.
Within a week after his doctor wrote his prescription, Kauila could enjoy his independence with his brand new heavy-duty walker without having to fear for his safety.
